Nintendo is bringing one of its most recognisable sports locations back with Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, a new sports game launching exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.

This time, players can take part in 12 different sports and activities, explore the island, collect items, compete against other players and use the unique capabilities of the Joy-Con 2 controllers.

What Is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a sports and party game developed and published by Nintendo for Nintendo Switch 2.
It is effectively a follow-up to 2022’s Nintendo Switch Sports, but its biggest inspiration is arguably Wii Sports Resort.
The game returns players to Wuhu Island, where they can participate in a selection of sports and other activities using motion controls.
Nintendo has confirmed 12 sports at launch, ranging from familiar favourites such as Bowling, Golf and Tennis to completely new activities including Skateboarding, Power Cruising and Thumb Wrestling.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Release Date
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launches on October 22, 2026.
The game is being released exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.
It is not coming to the original Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo has already opened pre-orders through the Nintendo eShop.
Where to Buy Nintendo Switch Sports Resort
If you’re planning to pick up Nintendo Switch Sports Resort when it launches, there are a couple of places worth checking for the best available price.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort on Amazon
Amazon is a good option if you want a physical copy of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort for your Nintendo Switch 2.
Physical copies can also be useful if you prefer having a boxed game that you can resell or lend to someone else later.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Digital Code
If you’d rather buy a digital copy, it’s also worth checking CDKeys/Loaded for the latest available price.
Digital codes can sometimes be cheaper than buying directly through the Nintendo eShop, although prices and availability can change.
Get it here for UK/Europe for the best deal.
Which Version Should You Buy?
If you like collecting physical games or want the option to resell your copy, Amazon’s physical version is the better choice.
If you simply want to start playing as soon as possible and find a good deal, a digital code from CDKeys/Loaded may be worth considering.
It’s worth checking both before buying, as prices can vary between retailers.
Is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort a Switch 2 Exclusive?
Yes.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is being developed specifically for Nintendo Switch 2.
The game takes advantage of features offered by the new Joy-Con 2 controllers, including their mouse functionality.
Nintendo has not announced a version for the original Nintendo Switch.

Welcome Back to Wuhu Island
One of the biggest attractions of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is the return of Wuhu Island.
The island was previously featured in Wii Sports Resort and became one of the most recognisable locations associated with Nintendo’s motion-controlled sports games.
This time, Wuhu Island isn’t simply a backdrop for the sports.

Players can actually explore the island.
You can travel around the resort, discover sightseeing locations, collect items and take part in additional activities away from the main sports.
Nintendo has revealed that players can explore by skateboard, Power Cruising and Prop Plane.
Can You Freely Explore Wuhu Island?
Yes.
Free exploration is one of the major new features in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort.
Players can travel around Wuhu Island and discover different locations rather than simply selecting a sport from a menu.
There are also collectibles and sightseeing activities scattered around the island.
You can:
- Search for hidden hibiscus flowers
- Collect Spocco Photos
- Chase dolphins
- Explore the island by skateboard
- Ride across the water with Power Cruising
- Fly around Wuhu Island in the Prop Plane
This gives Sports Resort a much more substantial world than the straightforward sports selection found in Nintendo Switch Sports.
All 12 Sports in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launches with 12 sports and activities.
They are:
- Boxing
- Table Tennis
- Archery
- Tennis
- Volleyball
- Bowling
- Basketball
- Golf
- Thumb Wrestling
- Skateboarding
- Power Cruising
- Prop Plane
It also has an additional Jump Rope warm-up activity.
Nintendo has designed each activity around different Joy-Con 2 control methods.
Boxing
Boxing makes its return with motion controls designed around punching, guarding and countering.

Players need to react to their opponent and look for opportunities to land successful attacks.
The objective is straightforward: outplay your opponent and earn the knockout.
Table Tennis
Table Tennis returns with a focus on positioning and shot selection.

Players can attempt to throw opponents off balance with different shots and use timing to control rallies.
It’s one of the sports that should feel particularly natural with Joy-Con 2 motion controls.
Archery
Archery has players physically aim and fire their virtual bow.

You’ll need to consider your aim and adjust for the wind before releasing the arrow.
There are also different rule sets, including versions where players aim at separate sections of the target.
Tennis
Tennis returns with a range of different shots.

Players can attempt to control rallies and use different shot types to outplay their opponents.
Nintendo is also introducing a more relaxed Laid-Back Match, featuring a larger, slower-moving ball for players who want something less competitive.
Volleyball
Volleyball lets players bump, set and spike their way through matches.

There’s also a Bump to the Beat mode, where players attempt to perform as many successful ball bumps as possible.
Bowling
Bowling is back, and Nintendo is giving players several ways to play.

You can control the direction of your ball and add spin before sending it down the lane.
There are also special lanes featuring obstacles.
For players looking for something a little more chaotic, 100-Pin Game returns as well.
Basketball
Basketball lets players dribble, pass and shoot while trying to beat their opponents.

There are several different ways to play, including:
- Three-Point Contest
- Three-Point Challenge
- Five-Streak Battle
It’s another sport that benefits from the game’s motion controls.
Golf
Golf returns with a selection of courses and different round lengths.

Players can choose between:
- 3-hole rounds
- 9-hole rounds
- 18-hole rounds
You’ll swing the Joy-Con 2 like a golf club as you attempt to drive, approach and putt your way around the course.
Thumb Wrestling
One of the strangest additions is Thumb Wrestling.

Rather than swinging a controller around, this activity involves using a single thumb to battle an opponent.
The objective is to pin your opponent and win the match.
It’s a simple concept, but it could end up being one of the game’s most entertaining multiplayer activities.
Skateboarding
Skateboarding is one of the sports that makes particularly interesting use of the Joy-Con 2 mouse controls.

Players can ride around dedicated courses and compete in different challenges.
There are also sightseeing activities and free exploration options.
Nintendo describes modes including Skate Sprint, Sightseeing Tour and Free Play.
Power Cruising
Power Cruising puts players on the water.

You’ll use the Joy-Con 2 like handlebars as you ride across the waves.
There are several activities, including:
- Sea Sprint
- Sightseeing Tour
- Free Play
So you can either race competitively or simply cruise around the island.
Prop Plane
Prop Plane is another activity that expands the game’s exploration.

You’ll use the Joy-Con 2’s motion controls to fly around Wuhu Island.
There are different ways to play, including:
- Sightseeing Tour
- Ball Battle
- Free Play
The Ball Battle mode adds a competitive element, while Free Play lets you simply explore.
Jump Rope
There’s also a Jump Rope activity that Nintendo describes as a warm-up rather than one of the game’s 12 main sports.

It gives players something to do before jumping into the main activities.
New Joy-Con 2 Controls
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort has been designed around the capabilities of the Joy-Con 2 controllers.
Depending on the activity, the controllers can become:
- Tennis rackets
- Boxing gloves
- Archery equipment
- Golf clubs
- Handlebars
- A steering mechanism
- A mouse
The new mouse functionality is particularly important for activities such as Skateboarding.
What Are Spocco Photos?
While exploring Wuhu Island, players can find Spocco Photos.
These collectibles provide additional reasons to explore the island rather than simply jumping between sports.
They can be discovered during activities such as Sightseeing Tours and while freely exploring Wuhu Island.
Spocco Points and Character Customisation
Nintendo is also changing how players unlock customisation items.
Playing sports in any mode earns Spocco Points.
These points can then be exchanged at the Item Center for customisation items.
This means players don’t have to rely exclusively on online play to unlock cosmetics.
You can use your points to customise your Mii or Sportsmate character.
Mii and Sportsmate Characters
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort allows players to use either a Sportsmate or a traditional Mii.
Sportsmates were introduced with Nintendo Switch Sports, while Mii characters bring back the familiar avatars associated with the Wii era.
This gives players the option of using a more modern character design or returning to the classic Mii look.
Island Crown Mode
One of the biggest new additions is Island Crown, an offline progression mode.
In Island Crown, players compete across the different sports and work their way through the rankings.
The ultimate goal is to challenge increasingly difficult opponents, including Island Champions and Island Legends.
This gives solo players a reason to keep playing even when they don’t want to compete online.
Multiplayer
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort supports multiplayer both locally and online.
On a single console, up to four players can participate in supported multiplayer activities.
Additional compatible controllers may be required depending on the number of players.
This makes the game particularly suited to playing with family and friends in the same room.
Online Multiplayer
Players can also compete against people around the world.
Nintendo has confirmed an online Pro League, where players compete against opponents around a similar skill level.
Players begin at rank E and can climb the league by winning matches.
For players who don’t want their wins and losses recorded, there is also Casual Online Play.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Online Requirements
Online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
A Nintendo Account and internet connection are also required for online features.
Local multiplayer does not require Nintendo Switch Online, although additional controllers may be needed.
Does Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Support Handheld Mode?
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort supports TV Mode and Tabletop Mode.
Nintendo’s specifications list Handheld Mode as unsupported.
This makes sense given how heavily the game relies on motion controls and the Joy-Con 2 controllers.
How Many Players Can Play Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
A single Nintendo Switch 2 can support 1–4 players for local play, depending on the activity.
Online multiplayer is also available through Nintendo Switch Online.
Nintendo has not yet provided final details about the maximum number of players who can participate online in every mode.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort vs Nintendo Switch Sports
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort builds on the foundation established by Nintendo Switch Sports but expands the concept significantly.
The biggest differences include:
Nintendo Switch Sports vs. Sports Resort
Feature Breakdown & Platform Comparison| Feature | Nintendo Switch Sports | Sports Resort |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Nintendo Switch | |
| Wuhu Island | No | Yes |
| Sports Included | Multiple | 12 |
| Free Island Exploration | No | Yes |
| Skateboarding | No | Yes |
| Power Cruising | No | Yes |
| Prop Plane | No | Yes |
| Thumb Wrestling | No | Yes |
| Island Crown | No | Yes |
| Spocco Points | No | Yes |
| Joy-Con 2 Mouse Controls | No | Yes |
Sports Resort brings back full Wuhu Island exploration alongside classic motor and aerial events like Power Cruising and Prop Plane, upgraded for Nintendo Switch 2 hardware with optical Joy-Con 2 mouse precision.
Sports Resort therefore feels much more like a successor to Wii Sports Resort than a simple expansion of Nintendo Switch Sports.
Is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort a Sequel to Wii Sports Resort?
It’s not a direct sequel in the traditional story sense, but it is heavily inspired by Wii Sports Resort.
The biggest connection is Wuhu Island, which returns as the central setting.
Several familiar concepts are also returning, while Nintendo has introduced new sports and activities designed around the Joy-Con 2 controllers.
The result is essentially a modern take on the Wii Sports Resort formula for Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort File Size
Nintendo currently lists the game’s estimated digital file size at 16GB.
Players downloading the digital version should therefore make sure they have enough available storage on their Nintendo Switch 2.
Final Thoughts
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort looks set to be much more than simply another collection of motion-controlled mini-games.
The return of Wuhu Island gives the game a much stronger identity, while the ability to freely explore the island adds something that wasn’t present in the same way in Nintendo Switch Sports.
With 12 sports and activities, Joy-Con 2 motion and mouse controls, online competition, local multiplayer, character customisation and the new offline Island Crown mode, there should be plenty for players to do.
The biggest question will be whether the additional activities and island exploration provide enough long-term content beyond the initial novelty.
We’ll find out when Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026.
For fans of Wii Sports Resort, however, the return to Wuhu Island could be exactly the nostalgic comeback they’ve been waiting for.
