What’s new in Rust, March 2026

Rust has never been a game to rest on its laurels, but the first quarter of 2026 has introduced some of the most dramatic meta-shifts we’ve seen in years. From quietly altering the fundamental passage of time to overhauling how we generate power and wage war at sea, Facepunch Studios is shaking the foundations of the wipe cycle.

Whether you’re a solo player clinging to the shadows or a clan architect planning your next fortress, here is everything you need to know about the current state of Rust.

The Sun Sets Slower: 105-Minute Days

Perhaps the most impactful change of the March update was one that Facepunch slipped in under the radar: a massive adjustment to the day/night cycle.

Rust ship in the game

Historically, players have planned their monument runs and offline raids around a standard 45-minute day. Now, the daytime cycle has been extended to a staggering 105 minutes, while the treacherous night cycle remains locked at 15 minutes.

  • Solar Power Dominance: Solar panels are now drastically more efficient, producing continuous power for over an hour and a half.
  • The Solo Struggle: Solo players who rely on the pitch-black cover of night to move loot or recycle safely will find their windows of opportunity severely reduced.
  • Monument Contention: Expect daytime firefights at major monuments like Launch Site and Oil Rig to become prolonged, drawn-out sieges.

River Real Estate & The Water Wheel

Move over, wind turbines. Facepunch is officially introducing the Water Wheel as a brand-new deployable for mid-to-high-tier power generation.

Crucially, this new electrical component requires flowing water, meaning it can only be deployed in rivers. Oceans, swamps, and stagnant lakes will not generate power. This entirely changes the value of map generation.

Why Rivers are the New Meta:

  1. Consistent Output: Unlike wind turbines (which fluctuate based on weather) or solar panels (which require daylight), rivers provide constant, unyielding kinetic energy.
  2. Territory Wars: River mouths—where players can access both fresh water for farming and the ocean for boat spawns—are predicted to become the most violently contested real estate in the game.

How to craft a waterwheel

While Facepunch is still tweaking the exact crafting costs on the staging branch, the Water Wheel is currently positioned as a mid-tier electrical component.

  • Tech Tree: Found on the Tier 2 Workbench path.
  • Estimated Cost: Expect to shell out a combination of Wood, Metal Fragments, and Gears. (It is significantly cheaper than a Wind Turbine, making it an incredible early-wipe target).

Deep Sea Combat & Mobile Bases

The highly anticipated—and briefly delayed—Naval Update finally dropped in February, and the oceans are no longer safe. Alongside the introduction of player-made modular boats, Facepunch has fundamentally changed how deep-sea skirmishes play out.

Players mounted on the newly introduced Cannons now receive a ~50% damage reduction from all incoming sources, making them incredibly difficult to snipe out of moving vessels. Furthermore, deployment restrictions on boats have been heavily lifted. Creative engineers are already building self-sustaining “battleships,” outfitting their vessels with Electric Furnaces and Powered Water Purifiers to stay out at sea indefinitely.

Crucial Quality of Life (QoL) Updates

Beyond the headline-grabbing features, two major QoL changes are shifting the early-game grind and late-game base building:

  • The Chainsaw Stealth Buff: Farming wood just got significantly easier. The Chainsaw now automatically registers as hitting the “sweet spot” (the red X marker has been completely removed during use). This maximizes yield and minimizes time spent exposed in the forest.
  • Armored Ladder Hatches: Builders rejoice. Facepunch is rolling out Armored Ladder Hatches in both square and triangle variants. This provides a much-needed structural upgrade for roof-access points and opens the door for entirely new, top-down bunker base designs.

Looking Ahead: “World 2.0” and Animal Husbandry

If you thought Rust was purely about PvP, the upcoming 2026 roadmap suggests otherwise. Facepunch has teased a massive “World 2.0” map generation overhaul slated for late April.

More surprisingly, the developers have confirmed the upcoming addition of cows and sheep, alongside a fully-fledged “animal breeding system.” Whether large clans will soon have dedicated farmers managing sheep herds for passive cloth generation remains to be seen, but it’s clear the survival mechanics are getting a lot deeper.

(Keep an eye on the official Facepunch Devblog for the exact April release dates).
