Thrumbos are some of the most powerful and valuable animals you can encounter in Rimworld.

These enormous, rare creatures can wander onto your map seemingly out of nowhere. They are beautiful, extremely dangerous and capable of taking down even well-equipped colonists if you underestimate them.

At the same time, successfully hunting or taming a Thrumbo can provide your colony with valuable resources and a powerful animal companion.

Here’s everything you need to know about Thrumbos in Rimworld, including their behaviour, combat abilities, taming, training, hunting and the valuable resources they provide.

What Is a Thrumbo in Rimworld?

A Thrumbo is a large, rare animal that can occasionally appear on your Rimworld map.

Thrumbos are highly resilient creatures with excellent combat abilities, making them one of the most dangerous animals that can naturally wander into a colony.

They are also valuable.

A dead Thrumbo can provide a large amount of meat and Thrumbo fur, while its horn can be harvested for use as a powerful melee weapon.

This creates an interesting decision for players.

Do you leave the Thrumbo alone and allow it to wander away, attempt to tame it, or take the enormous risk of hunting it?

How Rare Are Thrumbos?

Thrumbos are relatively rare compared with ordinary wildlife.

A Thrumbo event can therefore feel like a major occasion for a colony, particularly during the early and mid-game.

They can appear as part of a Thrumbo herd, meaning you may sometimes encounter multiple Thrumbos at once.

This can be both a fantastic opportunity and an absolute nightmare.

If you attack one Thrumbo while others are nearby, you can quickly find yourself dealing with several extremely powerful animals.

How Dangerous Are Thrumbos?

Very.

Thrumbos are among the most dangerous naturally occurring animals in Rimworld.

They have:

Extremely high health
Powerful melee attacks
High movement speed
Strong defensive capabilities
Excellent resistance to damage
A tendency to become enraged when attacked

Their combination of durability and damage makes them particularly dangerous for poorly equipped colonies.

A Thrumbo can potentially kill an unprepared colonist in a very short amount of time.

Should You Hunt a Thrumbo?

This depends heavily on your colony’s equipment, location and combat capabilities.

Early-game colonies should generally think very carefully before attacking one.

A Thrumbo has enough health to absorb a tremendous amount of punishment, while its melee attacks can devastate colonists who get too close.

If your colony only has basic bows or poor-quality firearms, attempting to hunt one can turn into a disaster.

A colony with strong weapons, multiple shooters and good positioning is in a much better position.

How to Safely Hunt a Thrumbo

If you decide that the rewards are worth the risk, preparation is extremely important.

Use Multiple Shooters

Don’t send a single colonist to fight a Thrumbo.

Use multiple ranged colonists so you can deal damage quickly while keeping your pawns away from melee range.

Keep Your Distance

The biggest advantage you have over a Thrumbo is ranged combat.

Don’t allow your shooters to become trapped in melee range.

Use the environment to create distance and give your colonists a safe route for retreat.

Use Cover

Good cover is extremely important.

Position your colonists behind walls, barricades or other defensive structures where possible.

A Thrumbo can still cause enormous damage if it reaches your defensive line, so cover shouldn’t be treated as a guarantee of safety.

Have an Escape Route

Always have somewhere to retreat.

If the Thrumbo reaches your defensive position, your colonists should be able to fall back rather than being forced into melee combat.

The Thrumbo Revenge Mechanic

One of the biggest dangers of hunting Thrumbos is revenge.

When attacked, a Thrumbo can become enraged and attack your colonists.

This can happen very quickly after your first shots.

Once the Thrumbo is angry, the situation changes completely.

You are no longer simply shooting a passive animal from a distance — you’re dealing with a rapidly approaching melee threat.

This is why positioning is so important.

Can You Tame a Thrumbo?

Yes.

Thrumbos can be tamed.

However, successfully taming one is extremely difficult.

Their wildness and low tameness chance mean that attempting to tame one can require a skilled animal handler and considerable patience.

Even when you have a capable handler, there is still a risk that the attempt will fail.

What Happens If You Fail to Tame a Thrumbo?

This is where things can get very unpleasant.

A failed taming attempt can cause the Thrumbo to become manhunter.

If that happens, your handler can suddenly find themselves standing next to an enormous angry animal.

For this reason, you should think carefully before attempting to tame a Thrumbo.

Don’t send an inexperienced animal handler over simply because the opportunity has appeared.

What Skills Do You Need to Tame a Thrumbo?

Animal handling skill is extremely important.

The higher the handler’s Animals skill, the better their chances of successfully handling difficult animals.

A colony that regularly works with difficult animals should therefore invest in highly skilled animal handlers.

If you don’t have a capable handler, it may be better to leave the Thrumbo alone.

Can You Train a Thrumbo?

Yes.

Once successfully tamed, a Thrumbo can be trained like other animals.

Depending on your colony’s setup and the current animal training system, trained animals can potentially assist with various tasks.

However, training a Thrumbo comes with the same consideration as keeping any large animal:

You need to feed it.

How Much Food Does a Thrumbo Need?

Thrumbos are enormous animals and require a substantial amount of food.

This is one of the major drawbacks of keeping one in your colony.

A single Thrumbo can consume considerably more food than smaller animals, particularly during periods when grazing is unavailable.

Before taming one, make sure your colony can support another large animal.

This becomes particularly important during winter or other periods when natural grass isn’t readily available.

Why Are Thrumbos Worth Keeping?

Despite the food requirements, a successfully tamed Thrumbo can be an extremely valuable animal.

Its size, health and combat capabilities make it a formidable addition to a colony.

A Thrumbo can potentially act as a powerful frontline animal during combat, giving your colonists another source of damage and a large target for enemies to deal with.

However, you shouldn’t treat a Thrumbo as invincible.

Even powerful animals can eventually be overwhelmed by concentrated enemy fire or large groups of attackers.

Thrumbo Fur

One of the main reasons players may decide to hunt a Thrumbo is its fur.

Thrumbo fur is one of the most valuable textiles in Rimworld.

It can be used to produce clothing and other textile-based items.

Thrumbo fur is particularly useful for producing high-quality apparel because of its excellent insulation and protection properties.

A successful Thrumbo hunt can therefore provide your colony with a substantial amount of valuable material.

What Is Thrumbo Fur Used For?

Thrumbo fur can be used in crafting a variety of textile items.

Players may use it for clothing such as:

Jackets
Pants
Shirts
Hats
Other apparel

The exact usefulness depends on your colony’s crafting priorities and the quality of the resulting item.

A high-quality piece of Thrumbo fur clothing can be extremely valuable.

Thrumbo Horn

Thrumbos can also provide a Thrumbo horn when butchered.

The horn can be crafted into a melee weapon.

This makes a successful Thrumbo hunt even more valuable because you’re not simply getting meat and fur.

You’re also getting a potentially powerful weapon component.

Thrumbo Meat

As you’d expect from an animal of this size, a butchered Thrumbo provides a large amount of meat.

This can give your colony a significant food supply.

However, the meat is effectively a bonus compared with the value of the fur and horn.

How to Butcher a Thrumbo

If you’ve successfully killed a Thrumbo, you can take it to a butcher table or butcher spot.

Your colonist can then butcher the corpse just like other animals.

Because Thrumbos are extremely large, the resulting pile of resources can be substantial.

Make sure you have enough storage space available before starting a major hunting operation.

Should You Tame or Hunt a Thrumbo?

There isn’t a universal answer.

Both options have advantages.

Encounter Options & Decision Matrix

Colony Survival

Weighing the rewards against colony risk is critical when dealing with rare, high-threat wildlife encounters.

Option	Advantages	Risks
Tame	+ Powerful animal, immense combat potential, and a valuable long-term asset.	! Difficult taming chance, high food requirements, and severe manhunter retaliation risk.
Hunt	+ High yield of nutritious meat, valuable insulating fur, and a rare decorative horn.	! Extremely dangerous combat scenario; can wipe unprepared hunters or melee pawns.
Ignore	+ Zero risk to your colonists, perimeter defenses, and medical supplies.	! You lose out on massive potential market value and rare late-game crafting resources.
Sell / Trade	+ Generates substantial silver and economic trade leverage with passing caravans.	! Requires successful handling/containment and relies entirely on trader availability.

Tactical Recommendation

Early colonies with low combat gear or handling skill should Ignore until a killbox or inspiration event occurs. Mid-to-late colonies with a skilled handler or Inspired Taming should prioritize Taming or prepared Hunting behind heavy defenses.

For a well-established colony, taming can be attractive.

For a colony struggling for resources, hunting can be tempting.

For a new colony with poor equipment, leaving the Thrumbo alone is often the safest option.

Can You Use a Thrumbo for Caravan Travel?

Tamed animals can play an important role in caravans, particularly when your colony needs additional carrying capacity.

However, whether a Thrumbo is suitable for your particular caravan depends on your colony’s animal management, food supply and the purpose of the journey.

Remember that taking a huge animal on a long journey means bringing enough food or relying on suitable grazing along the route.

Thrumbos and Combat

Thrumbos can be particularly useful during defensive situations.

Their large health pool means they can absorb considerable punishment, while their melee attacks allow them to inflict serious damage.

However, you should avoid relying entirely on a single Thrumbo.

Enemy weapons can still kill animals, particularly when several enemies focus their fire on the same target.

Using a Thrumbo alongside ranged colonists can be much more effective than simply sending it into battle by itself.

What Happens If a Thrumbo Goes Manhunter?

A manhunter Thrumbo is one of the scariest wildlife events you can experience.

The animal will actively pursue colonists and attempt to attack them.

If you don’t have a secure defensive position, the Thrumbo can cause serious casualties.

The best approach is usually to get your colonists somewhere safe and use ranged attacks when possible.

Avoid sending individual colonists out to fight it in melee unless you have an extremely good reason.

Tips for Dealing With a Manhunter Thrumbo

If a Thrumbo becomes hostile:

Get your colonists inside.

Use doors, walls and defensive positions to prevent the animal from reaching your vulnerable pawns.

Don’t fight it one-on-one.

A single colonist against a Thrumbo is a terrible matchup unless your pawn is exceptionally well equipped.

Use ranged weapons.

Keep your shooters at a safe distance.

Use your strongest defensive position.

Don’t fight the Thrumbo out in the open if you can avoid it.

Wait if necessary.

Sometimes the best strategy is simply to allow the threat to move away or for the situation to become more manageable.

Are Thrumbos Worth Hunting in the Early Game?

Usually, the risk is considerable.

Early-game colonies typically don’t have the weapons, armour, medical supplies or defensive infrastructure needed to deal with a Thrumbo safely.

The resources gained from a successful hunt can be fantastic, but losing a colonist can set your colony back dramatically.

If you’re playing on a difficult storyteller setting, the risk becomes even more significant.

The Best Time to Hunt a Thrumbo

A good time to hunt a Thrumbo is when your colony has:

Several capable shooters
Reliable ranged weapons
Good-quality equipment
Strong defensive positions
Medical supplies
A safe retreat route
Enough firepower to kill it quickly

The more damage you can deal before the Thrumbo reaches your colonists, the safer the hunt becomes.

Thrumbo Tips for New Players

If you’re new to Rimworld, there are a few simple rules worth remembering.

Don’t attack a Thrumbo just because it is nearby.

It’s easy to see a giant animal and think you’ve discovered a huge source of free food.

You haven’t.

You’ve discovered a giant animal that can potentially turn your colony into a collection of graves.

Check your weapons first.

If your colony has poor-quality ranged weapons, leave it alone.

Don’t underestimate its speed.

A Thrumbo can close the distance much faster than you might expect.

Protect your handlers.

If you’re attempting to tame one, make sure the handler isn’t left completely exposed.

Think about the food cost.

A tamed Thrumbo is a long-term commitment.

Final Thoughts

Thrumbos are one of Rimworld’s classic high-risk, high-reward animals.

They’re incredibly dangerous, but they’re also incredibly valuable.

A successful hunt can provide your colony with Thrumbo fur, meat and a Thrumbo horn, while successfully taming one can give you an exceptionally powerful animal companion.

The key is knowing when to leave one alone.

If a Thrumbo wanders onto your map while your colony is still armed with basic weapons, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with watching it walk past.

Sometimes the smartest Rimworld strategy is simply not shooting the giant angry animal.

Once your colony has the weapons, skills and defensive infrastructure to deal with one, however, a Thrumbo can become one of the most valuable opportunities your colony encounters.
