Once one of the trickiest animals to tame, ocelots are now a rare but fascinating mob in Minecraft. But here’s the thing: you can’t tame an ocelot like you used to—at least, not fully.
Let’s break it down.
🌿 Where to Find Ocelots
Ocelots only spawn in:

- Jungle biomes
- Light level 7 or higher
- On grass blocks, leaves, or logs
They’re skittish, fast, and often despawn quickly—so approach slowly and have the right item in hand.
🐟 What You’ll Need
To win an ocelot’s trust, you need:
✅ Raw Cod or Raw Salmon
Cooked fish won’t work. You can get raw fish by fishing or killing fish in rivers and oceans.
👣 How to Tame (Technically, Trust)
- Hold raw fish in your hand
- Approach the ocelot slowly (shift/walk—do NOT sprint)
- Stand still and wait for the ocelot to come to you
- When it gets close, feed it raw cod or salmon
- 💚 Green heart particles = the ocelot now trusts you
👉 Important:
Tamed (trusted) ocelots won’t run away anymore, but they won’t become cats either. That behaviour was changed in the 1.14 update.
🐈 Want a Pet Cat Instead?

To get a pet cat that follows you and can sit, you’ll need to tame a stray cat, not an ocelot. You’ll find stray cats in villages, and they work the same way—raw fish and patience.
🎮 Why Tame an Ocelot?
Even though they’re not true pets anymore:
- Ocelots are rare jungle mobs
- Trusted ocelots scare away creepers
- Great for builds with tropical or survival themes
🧠 Final Tip
Use a lead to bring a trusted ocelot back to your base—or build a jungle-themed enclosure and let it roam free!
