Ready to fly? Elytra are one of the rarest and most game-changing items in Minecraft. Once you’ve got a pair, you can glide over mountains, swoop through End cities, and traverse massive biomes in seconds.
But getting Elytra isn’t easy—it requires a trip to the End, defeating the Ender Dragon, and a whole lot of courage. Here’s exactly how to get your hands on these wings of glory.
🧭 Step 1: Get to the End
You’ll need:
- 12 Eyes of Ender (crafted from blaze powder + ender pearls)
- A stronghold (use Eyes of Ender to locate it)
- A Nether portal (for blaze rods)
💥 Once you’ve placed the Eyes of Ender in the End Portal… jump in!
🐉 Step 2: Defeat the Ender Dragon

Bring your best gear:
- Bow or crossbow
- Diamond or Netherite armour
- Plenty of arrows, ender pearls, and food
⚔️ Destroy the End Crystals first, then take down the dragon!
✨ Step 3: Find the End Gateway Portal
After defeating the Ender Dragon, a small portal with a floating bedrock frame appears.
You’ll need:
- Ender pearl to teleport into the gateway
💡 Build up 3–4 blocks, throw the pearl into the gateway.
🏙 Step 4: Locate an End City with a Ship

Now you’re in the Outer End Islands. Search for an End City, but you specifically need one with a ship floating nearby!
- Ships are the only place Elytra spawn
- Use a spyglass or zoom to check from a distance
📦 Pro tip: Loot everything—there’s top-tier gear in the chests!
🪽 Step 5: Claim the Elytra

Once aboard the End Ship:
- Look for an item frame with Elytra inside
- Break the frame to collect them
🎁 Bonus: There’s also a Brewing Stand with potions and usually a Chest with loot!
✨ What to Do Next
Elytra need firework rockets to fly long distances:
- Craft fireworks using:
- 1 paper
- 1 gunpowder (don’t add stars or you’ll damage yourself)
And don’t forget to:
- Enchant with Unbreaking III and Mending
- Repair using phantom membranes
🧠 Final Tips
✅ Bring blocks to bridge between islands
✅ Loot Ender Chests & Shulker Shells while you’re there
✅ Elytra don’t break immediately—they just become unusable until repaired
🏁 Fly Like a Pro
Getting Elytra takes time, skill, and bravery—but once you do, the entire Minecraft world opens up. Whether you’re exploring, building sky bases, or just showing off, Elytra give you wings.
