The leaks were true – Call of Duty’s popular Zombies co-op experience is making its way to this year’s Modern Warfare II. After initial rumors emerged earlier this week, Treyarch has now officially confirmed Zombies in a tweet earlier this week.
This tweet cements previous rumors and all but explicitly reveals Treyarch is bringing back zombies for Modern Warfare III in some capacity. Alongside this, in the latest Call of Duty blog post, Zombies was again confirmed for MWIII “Did someone say Zombies? More information coming soon on the new Modern Warfare® Zombies: The largest Zombies offering to date.”
Late last week, various insider sources and leakers speculated the return of Zombies outbreak mode previously seen in Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
Definite details remain limited on how zombies will be implemented. Given that Infinity Ward is developing Modern Warfare II’s main multiplayer, it’s likely Treyarch has handled adapting zombies.
Open World Zombies
Today, Call of Duty announced that Zombies would be an all new Open World experience, a completely new experience where multiple squads work together to survive and fight massive hordes of Zombies in what is described as the largest Zombies map ever.
How it will work
Some top content creators in the Call of Duty community reported some added features of the newest arrival to Zombies after visiting Sledgehammer Games studio last week to be the first to play and experience MWIII.
- The latest edition to the Zombies experience will be played on the new Warzone Map
- Players will be able to team up in squads of up to 6 and work with other teams, with up to 24 players total on any one Zombies match
- The Zombies mode in MWIII will be PvE only, meaning that while there may be multiple teams on the map, players will not be able to fight against each other but there will be human (likely ai) threats as well, not just the zombies themselves. However, while there will be other squads in the main gameplay, there will also be parts of the mode where your team are teleported to separate areas to battle zombies for more cinematic intel and rewards.
- The Difficulty of the mode increases the closer you get to the center of the map, unlike previous Zombies modes difficulty is not based on time or number of kills
- The mode will feature all of the classic Zombies staples such as mystery boxes, and Pack-A-Punch, as well buy stations, ammo depots, wall buys,
- Players will have 60 minutes of play before being forced to exfiltrate, similar to DMZ on the current game. Players will also be able to exfil from the map with rewards, or continue to fight until they are overwhelmed by the undead.
- The Zombies mode in MWIII will be a cinematic story part of the Treyarch Zombies storyline.
- Confirmed Zombies by content creators are Mimics, Abomination and Hellhounds, with likely others to be added to that.
Verdansk?
With Zombies being open world and some references to Verdansk in previous teaser trailers, such as the Verdansk football team logo being spotted. Could this be the return of Verdansk in a new form? Could this open world experience be set in Verdansk? As of right now, this is just speculation, but if true could prove to be a fan favourite mode among many players, particularly the large portion of the community that have been hoping for the return of Verdansk.
Alongside this in the latest image of this new Zombies mode posted earlier today by Call of Duty themselves, a sign can be spotted for a burger restaurant which looks oddly similar to burger town in Verdansk. See below to compare yourself!
This would be the first time a zombies experience has been included in a Modern Warfare title. Past games like 2019’s reboot featured limited zombie-like Spec Ops missions, but nothing fully-fledged.
With development ramping up for the October 28th launch, more concrete details on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Zombies will likely emerge soon. But for now, the cat is officially out of the bag – zombies are back! With it being described as “The largest Zombies offering to date”, we can only hope it lives up to that.
