Modern Warfare 4 Launch Modes: Every Multiplayer Mode Explained

The map selection is only part of the launch offering. Modern Warfare 4 also introduces several new modes alongside established Call of Duty favourites, giving players different ways to compete depending on whether they prefer objective-based combat, individual kills or tactical team play.

Over a dozen multiplayer modes are confirmed, with Standard, Core and Hardcore variants available for selected playlists. Hardcore features reduced health, friendly fire and a limited HUD, making positioning and accuracy even more important.

New Mode: Inflation

Inflation introduces an economy-based twist to traditional multiplayer combat. Players earn cash by eliminating opponents and collecting their money, with the team holding the most cash when the match ends taking the victory.

However, carrying more money comes with a significant risk. Players who cross the High Value Target threshold have their positions revealed to both teams, making wealthy players prime targets.

Eliminated players also drop some of their cash, while an overtime period increases cash multipliers during the closing stages. Teams must therefore decide when to hunt opponents, protect their earnings or take risks to build a bigger lead.

Inflation features 10-minute matches and supports parties of up to six players.

New Mode: Hijack

Hijack revolves around a single Data Spike that both teams must fight to control. Players can carry, throw or pass the objective to teammates as they attempt to deliver it to the opposing team’s communications station.

Planting the Data Spike generates points, while successfully completing the upload provides an additional reward. Teams must defend the planted objective throughout the process, creating opportunities for coordinated attacks and last-second defensive plays.

Matches feature four-minute rounds, with teams switching sides between rounds. The Data Spike can also reset to the centre of the map if it remains unclaimed for too long, is thrown out of bounds or is recovered through a successful defuse.

Unlike modes focused primarily on eliminations, Hijack places a heavy emphasis on teamwork and controlling the objective.

New Mode: Collateral

Collateral is one of the more interesting additions for players who enjoy Search & Destroy but want greater control over their equipment and loadouts.

The mode combines round-based bomb objectives with a buy system inspired by tactical shooters. Players begin with a pistol and $800, then earn additional money through eliminations, planting or defusing bombs and winning rounds.

Between rounds, that cash can be spent on weapons, equipment, perks and upgrades. Teams can even contribute towards purchasing a UAV to gain additional intelligence in the following round.

There are no respawns, and players cannot bring their usual custom loadouts. If eliminated, they lose their current equipment but retain the money they’ve earned.

Each match is played over rounds lasting two minutes, with the first team to win six rounds taking the victory.

Collateral could become a popular option for players who enjoy careful planning, economic decisions and high-stakes encounters where every life matters.

Returning Multiplayer Modes

Several familiar modes are also confirmed for launch, ensuring players can jump straight into the playlists they already know.

ModeHow it works
Team DeathmatchEliminate opponents to reach the team’s score limit.
DominationCapture and defend three objectives to earn points.
HardpointControl a rotating objective as it moves around the map.
Kill ConfirmedCollect enemy dog tags and deny opponents the opportunity to score with yours.
Free-For-AllCompete individually against every other player.
FrontlineFight from team bases, earning additional points for eliminations away from your starting area.
Search & DestroyAttack or defend bomb sites in rounds without respawns.
GunfightEliminate the opposing team or capture the overtime flag using shared loadouts.
Gun GameProgress through a weapon sequence by securing eliminations.

These returning favourites cover a broad range of playstyles, from straightforward gunfights to objective-heavy matches and competitive round-based encounters.

Gunfight also supports 2v2, 3v3 and 10v10 configurations, although the dedicated launch maps are designed around the smaller 2v2 format.

New Ground War Mode: Combat Outpost

Ground War receives its own new mode with Combat Outpost, which expands on the familiar Domination formula for large-scale battles.

Rather than simply capturing three flags, teams fight to secure outposts across the battlefield. Capturing these positions generates points and expands the team’s available spawn locations, helping players reinforce the frontline.

Holding an outpost is only the beginning. Teams can reinforce captured positions to unlock increasingly powerful rewards, including local UAV coverage, a JLTV vehicle airdrop and a Light Tank delivered to their headquarters.

This creates an additional strategic layer for Ground War. Teams must decide whether to capture new territory, strengthen existing positions or push towards enemy-controlled areas before their opponents can build up their defences.

Combat Outpost supports 32v32 matches lasting up to 20 minutes, making it a particularly attractive option for players who prefer coordinated team battles over smaller multiplayer encounters.

Proving Grounds: Practise Before Entering Multiplayer

Modern Warfare 4 also introduces Proving Grounds, a dedicated training environment designed to help players learn the game’s movement system.

The mode features movement tutorials and timed courses, allowing players to practise their skills before taking them into competitive matches. Each course offers an opportunity to earn an S rating, giving players a clear target to work towards.

For newcomers, this could provide a useful introduction to the game’s movement mechanics. Experienced players may also find it worthwhile if they want to refine their technique before jumping into multiplayer.

Two More Modes Are Coming Before Season 1

The launch lineup will expand further in the lead-up to the first season, with two additional modes planned for the Halloween period.

Possession is a new party mode that allows players to take over eliminated opponents. After securing an elimination, players teleport to their target’s location and take their loadout, creating a fast-moving experience in which weapons and positions can change constantly.

The mechanic could make Possession particularly chaotic, as players must adapt quickly to unfamiliar equipment and unexpected encounters.

Infected also returns, bringing back the familiar battle between Survivors and the Infected. One player begins on the Infected team, and every Survivor they eliminate joins the growing group.

The Infected must use their numbers, speed and stealth to overwhelm the remaining Survivors, while the opposing team attempts to hold out until the match ends. The final Survivor receives a health boost, providing a final opportunity to survive the growing threat.

Both modes are scheduled to arrive before Season 1 begins, offering some additional variety during the Halloween period.

When Does Modern Warfare 4 Launch?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on 23 October 2026. The confirmed multiplayer lineup includes 12 Core 6v6 maps, three Ground War maps, four dedicated Gunfight maps and Kill Block, alongside more than a dozen game modes.

Shipment arrives on 27 October, while Possession and Infected are planned for the pre-season period.

The combination of traditional multiplayer playlists, new objective modes and a changing arena in Kill Block gives players plenty of options to explore. Whether you prefer grinding eliminations, competing in tactical rounds or coordinating large-scale attacks, Modern Warfare 4’s launch offering aims to provide something for different types of Call of Duty players.
