Volition, Developer of Saints Row, Announces Studio Closure
Volition, the longstanding game development studio behind the Saints Row franchise, has announced they are closing down operations.
In a statement posted on LinkedIn, Volition reflected fondly on their 30-year history of “creating world-class entertainment for fans around the globe” and being “driven by a passion for our community.” However, they said that as part of a “restructuring program” from parent company Embracer Group to strengthen their position in the gaming industry, the difficult decision was made to close Volition immediately.
Volition stated they will provide job assistance and aid the transition for affected employees. They thanked fans worldwide for years of love and support, saying “You will always be in our hearts.”
The closure comes on the heels of mixed reviews for Volition’s latest title, Saints Row 2022. Despite being rumored as a headlining PS Plus game for September, fans criticized Saints Row for its abundance of bugs at launch. Volition tried to remedy issues with a massive ‘Sunshine Springs’ update in May 2023, but it seemingly wasn’t enough to save the studio.
After 30 years of operation and a catalog of fan-favorite games, Volition’s shutdown marks the end of an era. While disappointing for developers and fans alike, Volition leaves behind a meaningful legacy.
